Cultural bridges among Greece and Republic of Macedonia.
23 February, 2016
Under the umbrella of a European cross-border project among Greece and Republic of Macedonian a theatrical play titled “Women from the Underground” was given the first theatrical performance in the Macedonian language (19 February 2016) in Florina/ Greece. The invitation and the organization of the performance were organized by the “Cultural Organization of Prespa – Florina”.
About the performance we don’t have something to mention, it was perfect. But in its cultural and psychological dimension exists a political fact.
The work of the “Organization Prespa – Florina” is well known from the past, it works very professionally, it occasionally promotes political and cultural messages depending on the times and the moods of the Governments that want to play a role in the Balkans. Every event that the association undertakes is always well organized. In addition the Board does promotion campaigns well in order for the public to be well informed.
On this occasion however, the play in the Macedonian language did not follow the same practice.
In the invitation that was distributed by the Organizers the title of the play was written in English. Only few could understand what it was about.
The advertisement and the information on local blogs was not enough to make the public aware of many things. Also, the language in which the play was in wasn’t clear.
Someone can easily understand that many things had to be done in order to have better promotion for this event. For example, a detailed advertisement and also longer promotion not only 2-3 days before the play. On the contrary, there was an atmosphere of silence by the Organizers. It was obvious that there was a feeling of “what reactions will we have from the holly church which is extra sensitive in matters of the Macedonian language”, or “how will the ultra extreme rights local groups react”, “would there be democrats for support”. For this reason a softer, noiseless and distinctive promotion was chosen.
At this point let’s remember what had happened with a similar cultural cross border project which was held in the Rep. of Macedonia where a Greek theatrical Group by the “State Theater of Norther Greece” gave a performance “Vakches – Eyripidis” in the Greek language at the ancient theater “Heraclea” in Bitola (city 50kl far away from the Greek borders) on 24 August 2007.
The ancient theater was totally filled by a Greek audience but days before the performance there was a huge and long promotion not only in the local media but also with posters in the central streets etc.
How many people where in the Cultural Center of Florina watching a performance in the Macedonian language?
Was the problem the language, would the audience not understand the language*?
Did we miss a great opportunity to watch a great performance?
The beginning was made; bridges can be built not only with cultural base but also in other fields.
E.F.A – Rainbow Party will support anyone who contributes to a cultural renaissance and pioneer movements which contribute to a peaceful coexistence of the Balkan people.
Let’s not lose other opportunities “open borders open minds”.
