Press Release
An incomplete Agreement *
18 June, 2018
Following the signing of the Prespa agreement between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia, EFA-Rainbow notes the following:
• We have been declaring repeatedly and in various occasions that we are against any change of Republic of Macedonia's constitutional name. No blatant blackmale is allowed to change the democratic will of the Macedonian people who chose the name of their country 27 years ago. We are happy that again the citizens of the Republic of Macedonia will have the final word through the planned referendum. In any case, we considered that the proposed solution is far from ideal for both parties involved, as it directly implies division and irredentism, which are exactly the elements supposed to be eliminated by it. It is an incomplete deal because it is commonly known that geographical prefixes when included into official country names are usually used to foster nationalism and promote disastrous policies.
• It is undoubtedly positive that Greece for the first time recognizes the Macedonian language and identity in the neighbouring country but it also pathetic that until the last moment, Greece has tried to avoid the same thing for its own territory, using the cheapest tricks possible. These include new changes in the Macedonian Constitution, in a futile attempt to disconnect Macedonians in Greece from those in the Republic of Macedonia as well as constant references to the ancient times. We would like to remind that modern Greeks as well as modern Macedonians have the same relevance to those times. Absolutely none.
• Ever since the beginning of its political activities, EFA-Rainbow has denounced the "motherland doctrine". We act as Greek citizens, aiming to contribute to the democratization of the Greek state through the respect of our rights as an ethnic minority. One of the most important, if not the most important step towards this direction, is the full, honest and unreserved recognition of the distinct ethnic Macedonian identity without any footnotes or grotesque statements. Only then can Greece become a European democracy and only then the Agreement can be complete and fulfil its goals. Until this happens, the Macedonian minority will continue to fight together with the other minorities in the country and Greek democratic citizens who fortunately constantly grow in numbers.

*The Agreement was signed in the village of Nivici/Psarades, Prespa, where Macedonian political refugees are still not allowed to return with dignity.
